Bronze Award Brilliance: Troop 117's Blissful Bundles for TMH Cancer Center
Congratulations to Girl Scout Troop 117 on achieving their Bronze Award with a heartwarming project they called Blissful Bundles! Inspired by their desire to give back to those in their community facing difficult challenges, the troop crafted thoughtful care packages for patients at TMH Physician Partners - Cancer & Hematology Center.
The journey began with a brainstorming session where the girls explored around 20 different project ideas. With a voting process, they narrowed down their list to three options and eventually landed on the idea of “car kits,” though the name didn’t quite capture the spirit of their vision. After some creative discussions, Blissful Bundles was born—a name that reflected the joy and comfort they hoped to bring to patients.
Choosing the Right Cause
The troop researched local centers, clinics, hospitals, and hospices to find a meaningful place to support. Their discussions touched on important questions like “What is cancer?” “Who can be affected by it?” and “Can anyone get it, regardless of age, gender, or race?” These questions helped them deepen their understanding and empathy for those who might benefit from their project. Then, in an unexpected twist, their Troop Leader, Tami, shared that she herself had been diagnosed with breast cancer with the BRCA1 gene mutation during spring break.
Tami’s journey added even more personal meaning to the project, and the girls were wholeheartedly committed from that moment on. With Tami’s help, they connected with a patient navigator at TMH Cancer Center, who guided them on the specific needs and preferences of patients. Together, they curated a list of comforting and useful items, including youth and adult options, and developed a budget plan with donation suggestions.
What’s Inside a Blissful Bundle?
Each bundle was crafted to bring a touch of joy and comfort during treatment visits. The final “Blissful Bundles” included:
- Cups with lids
- Sugar-free candy
- Cozy socks
- Pens and notepads
- Crossword puzzles
- Mini travel games
- Handmade cards and bracelets
- Hand sanitizer
- Chapstick
- Deck of cards
- DIY keychains
With Tami’s encouragement and support, the troop was able to see the difference their bundles could make. Tami shared, “I had four surgeries within eight months of being diagnosed, and my support system was endless and uplifting. The girls were by my side, and their dedication to this project helped me along my own journey.”
Through this project, Troop 117 not only earned their Bronze Award, but also made a lasting impact on their community and developed a deeper sense of empathy and understanding for others.
