Gold Award Girl Scout Alana Ange from Troop 20100 in Mayo, FL, turned her love for animals into action with her project, Welcome to Your New Home on the Range. Alana’s goal was to address the issue of horse neglect and starvation by expanding critical resources for rescued horses in her community.
Partnering with a local equine rescue organization, Alana constructed a larger, isolated paddock designed specifically for horses recovering from illness or injury. This enclosure not only provides a safe, comfortable environment for healing, but it also helps prevent the spread of disease among rescued horses—giving more animals the chance to recover and thrive instead of being abandoned.
Alana’s impact didn’t stop at construction. She raised awareness through social media campaigns, advocacy efforts, and community outreach to spark conversations about equine welfare. Her efforts encouraged donations and supported ongoing discussions around local policies to better protect animals in need.
The impact of her project can already be seen. Wands, one of the rescued horses, is currently benefitting from the new space, and her story is just one example of the many lives Alana’s project will continue to change. These horses are not only finding second chances—they’re also going on to become companions, therapy animals, and performance partners.
“My project saves horses, which in turn has the power to change a human life!” said Alana.
Congratulations, Alana, on completing your Gold Award and making a lasting difference in the lives of animals and people alike!
